A Life among Frescoes, Gargoyles, and Arrow Slits
The Rabensteiner family lives in a special kind of house. Over the course of the centuries, "their" castle has known good times, and bad. Today, it is a cultural attraction for thousands of visitors. The Rabensteiners aren't afraid of castle ghosts, but when the countless dormice rustle in the rafters late at night, it does seem a little spooky. But Michl, the head of the family, says that you can get accustomed to everything.

Oswald's Castle
The ballad-singer Oswald von Wolkenstein inherited one-third of Castle Hauenstein (near Siusi) from his parents. The knight Martin Jaeger was the owner of the other two-thirds, who thus also owned two-thirds of all of the farmsteads in the vicinity that belonged to the castle. The two of them took poor care of the castle until Oswald married Margarete von Schwangau. And that's when the struggle for the ownership of the castle broke loose.
The Salego Ruins
In the middle of the forest, on a hill to the south of Siusi, stand the remnants of the once proud Fortress of Salego. Not far from it, on the same hill, you'll find Hauenstein, the fortress of the courtly ballad-singer Oswald von Wolkenstein. It is believed that a subterranean passageway once connected the two castles, which are about half an hour apart by foot. It is thought that this passageway once harbored a treasure in gold and silver.
The Trostburg Fortress
High above the entrance to the Gröden Valley stands the mighty Trostburg. The old fortress (formerly used to raise duties) of Duke Sigismunds "the Coin-Rich" is located on the other side of the Valle d'Isarco, in the village of Colma, The two fortresses are supposedly connected to each other by a subterranean passageway. Whenever the lords of the castle were in danger, they could escape to safety in Colma via this underground passage.
